On December 30, 2020, the TaLiMu well applied a new drilling configuration combining a multi-corrugated bit, vertical drilling system, and constant-wall-thickness, low-speed, high-torque motor. Drilling reached 4739 m, achieving a single-trip footage of 885 m in the 13-1/8″ section, with a mechanical drilling speed of 3.5–4.5 m/h.
This operation set a new record for single-bit footage and ROP under drilling-fluid conditions in a large-diameter borehole in the Bozi block.
The geological design indicates that the 13-1/8″ third-opening section is mainly composed of conglomerate. This well applies the new high-impact multi-edge bit ST616ZX, featuring a double-row structure with multi-edge cutters as the primary cutting elements. The compound rock-breaking mechanism significantly enhances drilling efficiency, and its impact resistance is over five times higher than that of conventional PDC cutters.
Conical cutters are positioned at the blade shoulder to reduce bit whirling damage. The increased cobalt-removal depth improves cutter wear resistance, while the optimized anti-rotation design further enhances bit stability and rock-breaking performance.
Compared with the average performance of the 13-1/8″ borehole in the adjacent Bozi-18 well, this bit achieved remarkable improvements:
